Rivian R2 builds off R1S, R1T at a lower price says design boss

logo design pricing

The first quality great logos share is that they’re relevant to the markets their companies target. More importantly, they clearly communicate a brand’s personality and identity. A primary component is the use of colors in your logo, which can trigger different emotions and show your brand’s personality to consumers.

Entertainment Logos

We’ll go into further detail about the different design methods and how to select the best one for your use case. The biggest difference between the options, other than just cost, is the process that the graphic designer goes through when creating your logo. This extensive process ensures that the logo can stand the test of time, and is aligned with your business goals.

Create something amazing. Easy.

These include using a logo maker or finding freelancers willing to work for under $300. Remember that these options may need more customisation and uniqueness than professional designers offer. Logo designers generally have various pricing models to cater to a wide range of client needs. These typically include fixed pricing, hourly rates, and package pricing. The fixed pricing model sees the designer quoting a set price for their services regardless of how much time they spend on the project.

Creative & Inspiring Earth Day Poster Ideas

Earlier this year, both HBO and Disney+ announced their plans to follow Netflix in preventing users from sharing their account with others. Peacock was launched in 2020 and had its first price increase last year, when the price of the Premium subscription went from $4.99 to $5.99 per month. Meanwhile, the Premium Plus plan cost $9.99 per month before the increase to $11.99.

Graphic Design Logos

Some designers choose this option as it allows them to set more if a client wants extensive customisation or additional design work done. To determine the total cost using this method, multiply the hours worked by the hourly rate. Including tools like an hourly rate calculator in this process can help quickly assess the total fees for these services. Creating a logo within the $0 to $100 price range can be achieved through online logo maker apps. DIY logo makers—like Shutterstock Create—are online tools that allow users to create their own logos using customizable templates, fonts, and graphics. The revision process also plays a role in the cost of a logo design.

Pros and Cons of Using a Marketplace:

One of the easiest ways to make your logo more versatile is to think about what format you create and save it in. Traditional photo images may pixelate when you resize them, but vector files are built to be scaled. Rivian wants to shake up the industry with its next-generation R2 electric vehicle. Starting at around $45,000, the R2 is expected to open up a new market of buyers.

Average cost for logo design

It’ll go on their website, their signage, and stickers for their minimal packaging. Think of all the places that logo could be placed and printed and how much money’s at stake if the rebrand doesn’t go well. You’ve got to start thinking about the value that the logo will bring to the client. Perhaps there’s a disconnect between the image you’re achieving and the image you want to portray to attract new customers. So you’re a business owner and stumbled upon this article hoping to find some info on how much a logo will set you back. A monochromatic color palette is a simple yet sophisticated way to create your next design.

The cost of a logo design is going to be different depending on the requirements, the size of the business, if it’s a rebranding, the amount of research & strategy that’s required and so much more. You'll receive a custom, professionally designed logo, ready-to-use files for print and online, including a lossless vector file. Full legal rights to the design are transferred to you, protected by a customized legal agreement. Now, if you really want to charge fair prices for your logo design work, then you must start looking for clients who can actually afford you. There are free logo makers like that offered by Zarla, while other platforms charge around $20.00 for a design. Using a logo maker is one of the easiest methods for creating a logo, thanks to the assistance of AI technology.

When you decide that you want to go for it and start a business, you want to do everything you can, to give it a strong chance of being successful. This will allow you to appreciate the true value of a quality logo design. Another key aspect of a good logo is that it is memorable, even from the first time you see it. The goal of a logo is to create a connection with a consumer and generate interest in your brand. When consumers can easily recall your logo and brand, they are more likely to connect them with your company. Logos that are easy to remember and produce a strong impact are valuable because they help your brand stick in consumers’ minds.

People who are serious about their business and understand the value of getting a quality logo and identity. In general, clients also often look for fast turnaround times and good communication skills in any designer or design agency. Freelance designers set their own prices for gigs, based on experience and the intricacy of the design. The estimated cost of using a designer is between $10.00 and $500.00. If this client is in the supply chain of the industry you’d like to work in, then yes.

If you’re interested in this method, we have a video from the Futur Pro Group archives in which Chris Do walks members through how to create an inputs-based bid for a motion graphics project. But even if you’re pricing with smaller mom and pop shops or large corporations, all clients want to know that you’re the least risky option. It really depends on the designer- their experience, their level of specialization in a particular style or industry, and their demand. A versatile logo ensures consistent branding and a cohesive visual identity, regardless of where it is displayed.

So here’s our number one logo design pricing tip that’s going to set you up for success and help you quickly weed out the price shoppers and the bargain-basement clients. They’re looking for agencies and designers with a track record of success with the type of logo design they need and they will have higher budgets. The impact of refinement on the logo design process cannot be overstated.

Florida architecture is a wooden frame style house widely used in Florida, United States around 19th century and is still presently known in several developers as a reference of themes. Common characteristics found in a Florida home are the metal roofs, large porch areas that are usually a house wrap around, raised floors and straight or conventional central hallways from the anterior to the rear portion of the house. A few of the most popular styles include American Craftsman, Cape Cod, ranch, colonial, contemporary, and Victorian but there are numerous others. Many old homes are still full of the character that reflects their particular style. But if you want to incorporate old house charm in a newer dwelling, you'll have to learn about some of the key characteristics that make each style stand apart. About two months after their dash to Las Vegas, the Stahls decided to drive up to this mystery spot and have a look around.

Some of the building materials generally used in Tuscan style buildings are stone, wood, wrought iron and tile. At present, several revivals and restorations continue to evolve, which still embrace simplicity and handicrafts. There are still shingled siding, stone details, overhanging beams, and rafters that are present in open porches with projecting eaves and deep gable roof.

Why Buy House Plans from Architectural Designs?

Modern architecture is perceived to have risen and developed from the Industrial Revolution’s Enlightenment and new technological abilities just like other modern movement in arts, literature and music. This is also said to be a reaction to eclecticism and the lavishness to the Victorian era and later Art Nouveau’s detail-oriented styles. The Mediterranean style home was influenced by the sunny countries, which are found on the rims of the Mediterranean sea. The major contributors to the Mediterranean style house classic design are the Italian and Greek styles, though this may have taken some concepts from Spain and is sometimes labelled as Spanish Modern. The features that define a Mediterranean house sometimes reflects landscaping and decorations in the interior, which are also a great addition to its overall style. French house plans usually have asymmetrical exteriors with a mixture of ornate elements that complete the design.

Common in this style are the large plate glass windows and either metal or concrete. It then decorates with a natural look of wood or stones and some geometrical shapes like rounds and rectangles incorporating them with other styles in its most creative way. Natural lighting is its favorite spotlight allowing it to come through the large windows and sliding doors.

Creating a design philosophy for yourself and for your company LogRocket Blog

design is philosophy

Knowing the reason behind each principle or guideline reinforces its importance and empowers an understanding of how, where, when, and why to apply it. Fukasawa developed his philosophy through an examination of the rituals and mundane interactions of daily existence. Designers, perhaps not as adept at wielding syllogisms, must become masters of narrative, employing visual representations, prototypes, and clear explanations to convey their design intentions with impact. Well, at least as much impact as they can muster without resorting to clichés or design trends that should be taken out and shot. According to Dieter, good design should be “honest,” “long lasting,” and “make a product useful,” among other things.

Unity in design principles refers to the cohesive arrangement of elements that ensures all parts of a composition work together harmoniously. It's achieved when each element appears to be an integral part of the overall design, resulting in a complete and aesthetically pleasing piece. Balance in design principles refers to the distribution of visual weight within a composition.

Recent developments highlight Cadence's emphasis on innovation, like its third-generation "dynamic duo" of Palladium Z2 enterprise emulation and Protium X2 enterprise prototyping systems. The company touted record $6 billion backlog in the quarter and $3.1 billion in current remaining performance obligations (cRPO). It also noted success for its Millennium supercomputing platform, including with a "leading automaker."

Design philosophy serves as a powerful tool for product designers, providing a clear framework and guiding principles that steer their creative process. In this article, we explored the concept of design philosophy, its elements, and its significance in the field of product design. By understanding the importance of having a design philosophy, designers can elevate their work, create meaningful products, and make a lasting impact. For instance, let’s consider a design philosophy centered on user-centricity and simplicity. In practice, this philosophy would influence the form of the product, emphasizing clean lines and intuitive interfaces.

How to Create and Validate Your Design Philosophy

Buckle up as we unpack its nuances, influence, and value in a deeply relatable and practical manner. Ultimately, your design needs to resonate with real customer needs and values. Creating a design philosophy is itself a design process, which is why you should invite users into it to inspire and validate your thinking. Your team needs a design philosophy because it creates accountability for your design decisions by articulating a clear rationale and structure from the wireframe stage of design right through to prototyping and iteration. A design philosophy helps you check and prioritize your design work and, most importantly, creates alignment around a shared sense of purpose.

“Life is chaotic. Buildings should Reflect it.” by Frank Gehry

This approach to design stretches back to the early 20th century and promotes simplicity, functionality and nature. Scandinavian minimalism principles of design are characterized by clean lines and block colors. With its bold yellow and blue logo and simply-designed furniture built for durability, Ikea is a good example of how popular this design trend is.

With support from Caja Segovia, the institution opened its doors in November 1969, housed in the historic building on Trinidad Street. The historic Palacio de Mansilla, protected under heritage decrees, is undergoing a rehabilitation project. The renovation includes interior upgrades, structural reinforcements, and the adaptation of spaces for educational purposes, featuring classrooms, workshops, and laboratories across all floors.

Scale can be used to create a hierarchy for and add emphasis to certain elements on a design. By using scale to make an element larger than others appearing with it, you can emphasise that element. Not only can you make an element stand out this way—you can also use scale to create a sense of depth (since nearer objects appear larger to the human eye). Exaggerated scales of images also add a certain level of interest and drama to them. Balance can be achieved by having symmetry in the design (for instance, having a webpage with centralised text and images). However, you can also achieve balance without symmetry — perhaps unsurprisingly, this is known as asymmetrical balance.

design is philosophy

As outlined in the visual hierarchy article on interaction-design.org, effective use of hierarchy follows natural eye movement patterns, enhancing user experience and making content more accessible and engaging. Properly implemented hierarchy ensures clarity and a seamless flow in design. Good design tells the right story relative to your mission and your brand. It strikes an emotional chord with your users that stands out as a competitive differentiator. In other words, a good design for your brand is one that adheres to your team’s design philosophy. A design philosophy is a step above your brand strategy and orients the team to aspirational goals so that every element of the customer experience is designed with clear intent.

As I fumbled through an answer I realized I didn’t really have an articulated design philosophy, or at least not one that easily came to mind. I thought what he said is somehow related to this design philosophy by Frank Gehry. To be able to design in the now yet last for a long time I think is a true achievement for an architect. It would sound pathetic to study historical structures that only replicated its own past.

Once you master the skills central to the design thinking approach, they can be applied to solve problems in daily life and any industry. With technology ever-evolving, there is always a better material to use in hardware or a new design concept to bake into a software product. The best options we have today will pale in comparison to the tools and resources we have in 10 years. Due to that, the design will have to either keep up or (better yet) drive these innovations by pioneering their use and rise in popularity. What these issues have in common is that they are all aspects of design, and that insights about them may be obtained by rational and critical reflection, rather than empirical observation.

The elements of visual design make up the fundamental building blocks of a product. Learning how to achieve unity, gestalt, hierarchy, balance, contrast, scale, dominance, and similarity will be extremely useful as you work in visual design. The elements of visual design — line, shape, negative/white space, volume, value, colour and texture — describe the building blocks of a product’s aesthetics. On the other hand, the principles of design tell us how these elements can and should go together for the best results. Many of the principles below are closely related and complement one another. In user experience (UX) design, minimizing users’ cognitive loads and decision-making time is vital.

Although simple, lines can possess a large variety of properties that allow us to convey a range of expressions. For example, lines can be thick or thin, straight or curved, have uniform width or taper off, be geometric (i.e., look like they are drawn by a ruler or compass) or organic (i.e., look like they are drawn by hand). Show users where they’ve come from and where they’re headed with signposts/cues. Don’t interrupt or give users obstacles – make apparent pathways that offer an easy ride. The “wow” is shorthand for a powerful, visceral reaction to visual images. Coordinate one-on-ones and group forums with individuals across all levels and disciplines.

Strip things down to their essential, core purpose and you get the most fundamental, simplified version of the object. We’ll find out the answers in this roundup of the 10 best design philosophies of all time. Ideally, your team should be regularly revisiting its principles and practices every time you’re reviewing design work together, whether that be during the wireframe stage or during endgame prototyping.

Pensacola's best waterfront restaurants include Oar House, Jaco's more

wahoo's fish house

The Fish House's upscale dockside dining experience overlooking Pensacola Bay and Seville Harbor isn't one to be forgotten. Heather Thomas, the city administrator for Snohomish, told KING 5 by phone that without a permit, the restaurant is not in compliance with city requirements and international building code. And if pepper enthusiasts want to get a jump start on New Mexico chile harvest season, Peppermania also offers pots of Hatch and Big Jim peppers.

Felix’s Restaurant and Oyster Bar

The park, formerly known as Premier Adventure Park, added its Caribbean restaurant and tiki bar in 2020 when it rebranded itself as Laguna’s. Now the site offers beachfront seating, Caribbean-inspired entrees and a myriad of drink options to go along with the park’s ropes courses, zip trails, go-karts and more. Felix’s is an oyster bar based out of New Orleans with a history dating back to the 1940s. In 2021, longtime Pensacola Beach staple Hemingway’s Island Grill shut its doors, paving the way for Felix’s to move into the space. The restaurant has spectacular views of the sound side, lively outdoor seating with music, fire pits, New Orleans lanterns and courtyards. You won't be surprised to find that The Crab Trap is a waterfront fish house on the Gulf of Mexico, but that should be the exact reason to grab your family or friends and head over.

Whiskey Joe’s Bar and Grill

At The Crab Trap, you'll find a boardwalk leading down to the water, rustic Florida décor, great views of the Gulf and a playground for the kiddos. Their idea was to recreate the food, fun and energy captured before and after surf sessions on these trips. The concept also drew inspiration from the trio’s childhood in Brazil and years spent working in their family’s Chinese restaurant. This year, the Southern California-based legacy chain, known for fish tacos and Pacific-influenced food, celebrates 35 years of business with a refreshed brand image Lam said is more reflective of who they are today.

Casino Beach Bar and Grille sits right on top of Pensacola Beach, with its sugar-white sands that lead right up to the restaurant. This is the place to go if you want to experience the sights and sounds of the Gulf of Mexico, island vibes and live music. Nick's Boathouse is located right on Pensacola Bay, next to the Community Maritime Park and offers a casual atmosphere.

Of course, Lam said, fish taco fans can always explore other parts of the menu to find a new favorite. The restaurant remodel is part of the new image Wahoo’s is cultivating, with fully renovated interiors. Updated floors and countertops and modern décor are just some of the changes regular diners might notice. As of late Friday night, an online petition has been signed by more than 3,000 people in an effort to convince the city to change its stance. "While some of these structures may have been installed by engineering or construction firms, they still are required to be permitted and meet the international standards," added Thomas. For everyone, all the available peppers come in 4-inch plant pots and are alphabetized with Scoville Scales for heat checks.

Restaurant Description

At Wahoo’s, we encourage you to nourish yourself with food and experiences that make you feel more alive. So, ride those waves, care for your community, love what you eat every day, and be authentically you. Sarah Mosqueda covered Orange County food, art and culture for TimesOC and is now a staff writer in Food for the Los Angeles Times. She also has several years of experience in the restaurant industry, including as a proprietor. Journey acknowledges the lack of permit but argues the tent does meet international building code.

Established in 1964, the Flora-Bama Lounge is known beyond Florida as one of the top beach bars and is uniquely located on the Alabama-Florida line between Orange Beach and Perdido Key. The restaurant has five stages for live music, several beachfront bars and, of course, spectacular views of the Gulf. While Atlas Oyster House is The Fish House's sister restaurant, shared deck with a waterfront view and all, executive chef Jason Hughes has transformed the menu to make the restaurant a destination of its own. At Atlas, you can expect to see creative, off-the wall options, like Bloody Mary oyster shooters and Maine lobster corn dogs. But Atlas isn't just for the seafood lovers, as you don't want to miss the bourbon barbecue Clarke County Cookout Cheeseburger.

wahoo's fish house

With delicious food and drink in a stylish yet unpretentious setting, Wahoo's Fish House brings a refreshing new option to locals and visitors looking for a top-notch Murrells Inlet dining experience. This stylish creekside restaurant offers an extensive menu of creative and innovative cuisine including fresh Murrells Inlet seafood and artistic Murrells Inlet sushi options. Windjammers is designed to be a local slice of paradise, with the phrase "come for the food, stay for the views" as its motto. The restaurant is positioned on the Navarre Beach fishing pier that spans 1,545 feet long and stands 30 feet above the water, perfect for securing a sunset view. While the restaurant specializes in fresh seafood, like the Gulf shrimp po'boy and redfish tacos, it also offers a wide variety for land-lovers, like the waygu pier burger and marinated steak tacos. If you're looking for a laidback beach spot to enjoy some fresh seafood overlooking the Santa Rosa Sound, Dewey Destin's Navarre is perfect for a relaxing day by the water.

Atlas Oyster House

It’s located in the second floor of Hilton Pensacola Beach and offers a beautiful view of the Gulf of Mexico. The restaurant focuses on offering unique flavors using the finest in-season ingredients available. Juana's is Navarre's oldest family owned restaurant and bar, and is still a favorite hangout spot for locals and tourists alike. At Juana's, you can dance to live music, play a game of sand volleyball and take a ride on a jet ski all in one day. There are plenty of areas to overlook the Santa Rosa Sound, whether it be on the Sailors' Grill deck or the climate-controlled Schooner Bar.

Paradise Bar & Grill is a popular hangout spot for locals to come out and enjoy live music with good food and a good drink. The award-winning bar is located just behind Paradise Inn on the Santa Rosa Sound, making it easily accessible by boat, car and foot. Flounders promises on a unique and interesting experience – with good food – and it’s a promise they deliver on. As soon as you walk under the remnants of an old Pensacola Beach sign marlin, you know you’re in for a good time. Other notable items inside and outside the restaurant is the 55-foot M/V Flounder ship, a 980-pound blue fin marlin and tons more.

The company owners are directly related to the city the restaurant got its start in in Destin, Florida, as Leonard Destin, founded the town in 1835. The restaurant group has several Panhandle locations, and pride themselves in serving fresh, sustainable seafood. The Navarre location is the newest after opening in 2018, and the beach backyard is meant to be enjoyed to the fullest, with fresh cocktails, craft beer and games. Shaggy’s Pensacola Beach is a laid-back waterfront bar and grill that offers a seafood-centric menu, frozen daiquiris, an extensive craft beer list and more.

Others scorch up the Scoville Scale like the small but mighty Chiltepin and the Carolina Reaper, which holds the Guinness World Record for being the hottest pepper on earth. With that range, Peppermania’s offerings span the globe with chiles that originate from Asia to Europe to Latin America. And thanks to the Pensacola area's growing foodie scene, you're not going to be stuck choosing between chicken fingers, steak or seafood while you soak in the scenery. Make sure you click Allow or Grant Permissions if your browser asks for your location. For those concerned that their favorite menu item might get lost to the revamp, fear not. Items like the Baja Rolls may not be listed on the menu any longer, but Lam said that doesn’t mean they are gone forever.

The island-style vibes offer waterfront views from every seat in the establishment. Located right off the celebrated Murrells Inlet Marshwalk, this two-story seafood and sushi restaurant is crafted with large windows overlooking beautiful and charming marsh front views. After your dining is done, stroll next door to Wahoo's Bar & Marina to enjoy the best live entertainment Murrells Inlet has to offer.

Drift offers a casual fine dining experience from the second story of the building that also houses the Casino Beach Bar and Grille, one of its sister restaurants. The more upscale establishment offers a beautiful, panoramic view of the Gulf of Mexico. Their dishes are meticulously prepared with mostly locally-sourced ingredients that pay homage to the best of what Pensacola Beach has to offer, with healthy alternatives to fresh land and sea plating.

SNOHOMISH, Wash. — A family restaurant is at odds with the City of Snohomish over its COVID-era outdoor seating area, which the city says requires a permit. Crabs on the Beach is another waterfront restaurant parked right on Casino Beach. You can catch a breathtaking view of the sunrise from its open-air, Gulf-side deck or on the upstairs patio. Whiskey Joe’s Bar and Grill opened its fifth location in Pensacola Beach last year. The restaurant has a mixture of beachfront and indoor seating, caters to people looking for a quick bite to eat with a carry-out window and you can even order online while you’re tanning in the sun on the sand.

The Sweet Way Candace Cameron Bure Celebrated 36 Years Since Being Cast As Full House’s DJ Tanner

Getting in a workout became self care for the actress and a way to get stronger and healthier, not just lose weight. Her passion for fitness also helped her maintain a more positive relationship with her body. Seeing what her body was able to accomplish gave her motivation to keep taking care of it. To this day, she'll try to get in hour-long workouts four to five days a week to keep both her body and mind in a balanced place.

Early Life

But the cast was busy blocking out the nose with Candace Cameron Bure telling E! "I went through the course and at the end, I zip-lined diagonally the length of the living room and then I landed on a platform," Candace explained to costars Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber on their How Rude, Tanneritos! "But during rehearsal, the rig was not set up correctly and there was no safety stop on the end of it." Nearly 30 years after Full House first aired on TV, Cameron Bure returned to her roots with the arrival of Fuller House on Netflix in 2016. Borrowing heavily from its predecessor, the spinoff featured Cameron Bure's D.J. As a widow and mother in her old childhood home, with Saget, Stamos and most of the rest of the original cast making regular appearances.

Ultimately got back together in season three—something the writers had wanted to fix since the original series broke them up. "Although Ashley and Mary-Kate will not be a part of Fuller House, I know how much Full House has meant to them, and they are still very much considered family," producer Robert L. Boyett said at the time. "It has been exciting to see how they have built their professional careers, and I support their choice to focus on their fashion brands and various business endeavors. I appreciate their support and good wishes towards Fuller House." Despite leaving the acting world after the original series ended in 1995 to work in academia, Andrea Barber had no hesitations about reprising the role of Kimmy Gibbler as one of the new show's three leads. And love it they did, with IndieWire reporting that season one of Fuller House was Netflix’s highest rated original-series, according to data from Symphony Advanced Media. "If I just even shifted my weight the tiniest bit," she explained, "it would have probably broken my neck and landed right on top of my head."

Hallmark Channel work

"I guess a lot of young people go to college during that season of their life to figure things out, and that was what that time was for me," Candace remembers. "My early 20s were a time of discovery. I felt like a hot mess and I needed that time to find the path I wanted." It's clear Candace lives by the saying "family is everything." In fact, you may have noticed that there's a small gap in Candace's career, between the late '90s and mid-2000s. That's because Candace spent those years focusing on raising a family with her husband of almost 24 years, NHL star Valeri Bure (they have three children together, Natasha, 21, Lev, 20, and Maksim, 18).

The following year, she co-starred with Randy Travis in The Wager, and starred with Tom Arnold in the TV movie Moonlight and Mistletoe for Hallmark Channel in 2008. The actress known for playing eldest daughter D.J. Tanner on the popular ABC sitcom and the Netflix sequel series Fuller House posted a photo on social media Friday of herself in a wedding dress with her hands raised high in a celebratory pose. Erin Clements is senior pop culture/lifestyle editor at TODAY Digital, where she edits and writes trending news and features and produces videos. “Fuller House” is wrapping up after five seasons — but not before D.J., Stephanie and Kimmy all walk down the aisle. Bure went on to explain that her character, D.J.

It’s been a whopping 36 years since fans first heard “Whatever happened to predictability? ” and sitcom TV was changed forever. The Tanner family came into our lives on September 22, 1987, and the rest is history. Full House is still very much a part of the fans’ and cast's lives today.

In 2014, she was a contestant on season 18 of Dancing with the Stars, finishing in third place. Bure also starred as Summer van Horne on Make It or Break It. From 2015 to 2016, she was a co-host of the daytime television talk show The View.

"The fact that the producers chose to break them up, and the storylines that followed, were not big crowd-pleasers. That always bothered me," Jeff Franklin, who left the original series after season five, said. "So I looked at this show as an opportunity to let Steve and D.J. get back together someday and have a chance and see what happens." John later revealed on Instagram that "every single network and streamer" said no to the idea before Netflix decided to reboot it. In 1998, Cameron Bure gave birth to daughter Natasha. That same year, at the age of 24, she committed herself fully to the Christian ministry, and when son Maksim was born in 2002, Cameron Bure took a hiatus from her acting career to enjoy life as a wife, Christian and mother.

The house has been closed to the public for some time due to the need for building conservation. The current project activity is focusing on the conservation of Canna House, collections management and collections review, in preparation for opening to the public in spring 2025. The project includes improved archive and collections storage, a staff office, welfare facilities and a research reading room.

Extensive work has also been carried out on the roof, routing out and repairing water ingress points, re-slating and downpipe works. External drainage works have further reduced water ingress to the foundations of the house and allowed troublesome ‘pooling’ to disperse for the first time in 20 years. IT has also been improved and we now run on the same internet provision as the rest of the island, with local support based on the island of Rum. Many early features have survived in the building, including original servants’ calling bells to the sides of the fireplaces in the main reception rooms and many early gas fittings and lamps (above, centre and right) that have survived throughout the main house. And that’s basically the story of my first five years here, looking after Canna House, its material collections, its incredible library (I am a qualified librarian) and its priceless archive of Gaelic folklore and song. I entered a ‘quiet home’ with a new ‘beginning’ in a place which I had yet to discover. I’ve worked in a house filled with echoes of laughter and music, voices of friends past and present, and the love of story. New windows and sills have been installed in the west wing, solving longstanding damp ingress. There are also nearly 200 vinyl disc recordings in Canna House, including 110 of Gaelic folksongs recorded by JLC in Barra and Uist in 1938. These were the first electrical recordings of such material and are a valuable resource – many of the singers recorded had died before the arrival of magnetic tape recordings.

This is a home where people lived, loved and laughed, and it is still just as the Campbells left it, with their personal effects, furnishings and possessions. Everything in the house has a story to tell – some sad, some hilarious, all memorable. Indeed, the Thoms have left photos, furniture and artefacts that also make an important contribution to the Canna House archive.

In addition, I use the images from the earlier Thom collections in presentations for visitors, so they can see Canna at an earlier stage. A film festival was also planned for this summer but has now been postponed until next spring. My love affair with Canna House began 25 years ago when, as a Gaelic singer, I began studying the songs in the Canna Collections after singing them for the first time in South Uist at the Ceòlas summer school. I studied her work in tandem with the precious volumes of Hebridean Folksongs published by her husband John Lorne Campbell, frantically trying to buy up copies of the out-of-print books from all over the world! As part of his mission to record for posterity the spoken-word heritage and songs of Gaelic culture, John Lorne Campbell also made sound recordings of traditional storytellers and folk songs.

The beautiful Steinway piano has been brought back to life with extensive tuning work and, crucially, the playing by several wonderful musicians. It was a lovely day and people commented how wonderful it was to hear music coming out of Canna House again.
